Indivisible & MLK

Dear Indivisibles,

Our communities are at the heart of this movement. Taking action in our communities, in our districts, in our states to build long-lasting local power.

Why? Because when we all build our power locally, our collective power can change what’s politically possible.

This year, alongside our daily Indivisible work, we want to highlight the importance of giving back to our communities in the form of service. That’s why this January 21, Indivisible is proud to partner with the Corporation for National & Community Service to support volunteer projects happening across the country as a part of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service.

Service to our communities is at the heart of everything we do as a movement, and we invite everyone to take part and honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy.

Here’s what you can do this MLK Day:

Check out the MLK Day events near you at MLKday.gov. If there’s a service opportunity in your area, talk to your local Indivisible group, friends, and family about attending together.

Plan your own event! If there’s not an event currently near you, you can also plan your own service project. Be sure to register your event on MLKday.gov to help others find your project and spread the word, as well as registering on the Indivisible event map. For more resources and ideas, check out this event toolkit prepared by Global Citizen.

More than ever, we need to hold tight to the values of justice and freedom that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. espoused in his life. By weaving service into our lives as Indivisibles, we honor Dr. King’s legacy by giving back to our communities on January 21 and beyond.

In solidarity,

Indivisible Team

An Encounter On The US/Mexico Border

By John Grant
This Can’t Be Happening, 11/27/18

As gullible North Americans were told of disease-ridden Mexican and Central American rapists, killers and ISIS terrorists invading America from the infernal regions of the western hemisphere, on November 17 and 18, Veterans For Peace and other activist organizations sponsored a two-day border-straddling demonstration in Ambos Nogales, the term that covers both Nogales, Arizona (population 20,000) and Nogales, Sonora, Mexico (population 220,000).

Speaking for myself, every Mexican or Central American I ran into, saw on TV or read about as part of the caravan phenomenon was clean and quite nice. Having spent time in Honduras in the 1980s, myself, I’m well aware of the cruel and bloody aftermath of the 2009 coup in Honduras that President Obama and Secretary of State Clinton covered over like a cat covering her business. The only difference between them and Trumpism, it that Trump, in this respect, is more honest with his in-your-face, cruel lack of empathy and the arrogance of American exceptionalism. Thanks to our documented historic behavior vis-a-vis Central America, we’ve especially placed poor Hondurans between a rock and a hard place. It has now come to a head with caravans running up against the US border in Tijuana. These tensions are also felt in Ambos Nogales and its obscene border wall, shown below from the Mexican side….

The Pittsburgh Synagogue Shooting Is the Inevitable Result of Trump’s Vile Nationalism

By Sasha Abramsky, The Nation, October 27, 2018

Shame on all those who have been silent—or, worse, supported the president’s agenda.

We don’t yet know everything that motivated the Pittsburgh synagogue shooter Robert Bowers. And, truth be told, we may never know exactly what psychological aberrance led to his deadly rampage this Saturday morning.

Bower’s twitter postings, however, give at least a partial window into his soul. The man is a rabid nationalist. He believes that Jews seek to control the world. He is convinced that Jews, via HIAS, the refugee-rights and -resettlement organization formerly known as the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society, are bringing in “invaders”—such as the caravan of destitute and terrified Central American families walking their way north through Mexico.

Bowers is a Nazi sympathizer. And, unlike Cesar Sayoc, the man suspected of mailing more than a dozen pipe bombs to political and media figures around the country over the past week, he hates Trump, believing that Trump isn’t nearly nationalist enough and, in fact, is controlled by a cabal of globalist Jews.

But here’s the thing: While Bowers might fashion himself as an anti-Trump figure, the reemergence of deadly anti-Semitic violence perfectly fits the awful political moment Trump himself is presiding over. The viciously nationalist rhetoric Trump now uses at his rallies, his onslaught against “globalists”—the word itself, along with “cosmopolitan” has always been anti-Semitic code for “Jewish”—his demonizing of immigrants, of refugees, of asylum seekers, his accusation that George Soros is somehow behind the caravan of Hondurans and Guatemalans, this is quite simply fodder for anti-Semites. “Soros” to anti-Semites in 2018 is a similar slur to “Rothschild” in the previous century….
