Tell the Senate NRA lapdogs what you think of them blocking expanding background checks

email, 4/23/15

I was just a little girl in 1999 when my father, Ricky Byrdsong, was shot and killed by a deranged man who was able to get a gun with ease despite his record of dangerous behavior.

That’s why I left my home in Atlanta last year to visit Capitol Hill and confront face-to-face the senators who freely accept corporate gun lobby money: because they’re the same senators who voted against expanding life-saving Brady background checks that would help keep guns out of dangerous hands.

I figured if I showed up in person, I couldn’t be ignored.

I was wrong. They’re at it again. This week, representatives from the corporate gun lobby are back on the Hill, meeting with their closest allies in Congress, all of whom have taken corporate gun lobby money: Rand Paul (R-KY), Kelly Ayotte (R-NH), Heidi Heitkamp (D-ND), Lindsey Graham (R-SC), Jeff Flake (R-AZ), John Cornyn (R-TX), and Chuck Grassley (R-IA), among others.

I can’t be there in person this time, but my fellow gun violence prevention advocates are storming the Hill to hold these senators accountable on my behalf.Help me support their efforts by calling 1-866-205-1084 and congratulating these gun lobby lap dogs on receiving their special obedience school certificates for blocking legislation to expand Brady background checks today.

My dad was my hero. A background check could have saved his life. My greatest wish is that no one has to suffer the way my family did—that no child has to grow up without a parent. So please, call 1-866-205-1084 and tell the senators who gladly take money from the corporate gun lobby that the voice of the overwhelming majority of Americans who support expanding Brady background checks won’t be ignored.

Our voices together can’t be dismissed.

Elizabeth Warren: Obama Trade Deal Could Undermine Wall Street Reform

by Lauren Weber, Huffington Post, 4/22/15

WASHINGTON — Sen. Elizabeth Warren on Wednesday warned that a major trade deal being negotiated by the Obama administration could hamstring Wall Street reform efforts.

Warren raised the issue in a letter to U.S. Trade Representative Michael Froman, which was also signed by Sens. Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.) and Ed Markey (D-Mass.). The correspondence highlighted a broadening rift between President Barack Obama and the progressive wing of the Democratic Party over economic policy, less than a week after Warren and Obama squared off over a budget deal that provided government subsidies for risky derivatives trading.

“We are concerned that the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) could make it harder for Congress and regulatory agencies to prevent future financial crises,” the letter reads. “With millions of families still struggling to recover from the last financial crisis and the Great Recession that followed, we cannot afford a trade deal that undermines the government’s ability to protect the American economy.”…

Kochs Defend Purchase of Scott Walker

By Andy Borowitz, The Borowitz Report, 4/21/15

NEW YORK (The Borowitz Report)—Koch Industries is defending its acquisition of Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker against charges that it overpaid for the Midwestern politician.

After co-owner David Koch revealed that Walker had become a wholly owned subsidiary of Koch Industries, he set off a firestorm of criticism that the company had spent too much for a worthless asset.

“There was absolutely no bidding war for Walker,” an industry analyst familiar with the market value of politicians said. “Even Sheldon Adelson had no interest in acquiring him.”…

Koch Brothers Declare Scott Walker Is Our Man

By Brendan Fischer and Mary Bottari, PR Watch, Center for Media and Democracy, 4/20/15

Has Scott Walker won the Koch primary?

Charles and David Koch, the billionaire co-owners of Koch Industries, one of the largest privately-held companies in the world and the overseers of one of the biggest private political organizations in the country, told Republican donors in New York on April 19 that Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker is their man for President.

“We will support whoever the candidate is,” David Koch said, “but it should be Scott Walker,” according to an account in the New York Times.

Koch, whose political network plans to spend an astonishing $1 billion in the 2016 presidential elections, said “Scott Walker is terrific and I really wish him all the best. He’s a tremendous candidate to be the nominee in my opinion” (although he later said “I am not endorsing or supporting any candidate for president at this point in time.”)

The Wisconsin-based Center for Media and Democracy (CMD) has been covering Walker–and his Koch backing–since 2011. CMD has identified at least $11.6 million in support for Walker from the Kochs and their affiliated groups, plus millions more in indirect funding….
