A defining moment for the president

letter, Phila Inquirer, 11/23/09

One cannot help but think that this is a defining moment, in President Obama’s decision on Afghanistan.

Will he and his administration primarily pursue narrower, military options, or seek wider, diplomatic solutions? Will this be a transformational period, or simply a continuation of past policies and practices?

Obama was elected, among other things, to provide more enlightened, progressive approaches than those of his predecessor. Will these ideas and proposals for social improvement and renewed innovation be sidetracked by another distant war? Will he have both the mind and heart, the wisdom and courage, to follow his own best vision?
