This Veterans Day 2009, there was much to think about and reflect upon. The shootings at Fort Hood this past Friday call for our sympathy and empathy, as do the continued deaths of servicemen and women, as well as civilians, in Iraq, Afghanistan, and now Pakistan.
There may be better ways of resolving political problems and international disagreements, but they have not yet been fully discovered or implemented.
President Obama’s predicted decision to send tens of thousands more U.S. troops to Afghanistan is a latest unfortunate example.
No one need question the dedication and discipline of those who are sent, but rather the policies and decisions of those who would unnecessarily send them. Those in government or business who sit in offices, hide behind desks, and lean back on easy chairs while ever toying with the lives of others bear the far greater responsibility, and disgrace.
